Haddonfield Child Care

"Hanging in her bedroom, framed in gold, is the still life watercolor she painted one morning. Her EDKP teacher placed a large bouquet of fresh flowers on a table in the middle of the room, and the little students proceeded to sketch and paint the scene. They worked on it all week, and Addison's turned out so lovely that we framed it. It hangs as a fond memory of Haddonfield Child Care and all the learning that took place there."

HCC and Middle School Enjoy Working Together In a very successful joint project, seven students from the Haddonfield Middle School Peer Leadership Program were recruited to pilot a program with HCC afterschool students at Central School this year.
The project, developed and overseen by Middle School staff members John Toto and Marci Mastantuono, was based on the "Forty Developmental Assets" of the Search Institute. The Peer Leaders engaged their younger peers in a variety of activities each Monday, all based on materials from Search. The goal was to teach the elementary age children social skills aimed at developing internal assets necessary to grow into happy, strong and successful adults. At the same time, the project provided a vehicle for Middle School students to develop their own leadership skills. At the end of the semester, HCC hosted a luncheon party for the Peer Leaders, the sponsors, HCC staff, and HMS Principal Noah Tennant. While enjoying pizza, the middle schoolers had an opportunity to discuss and reflect on their experiences and suggest ways to improve the project. All were in agreement that the project was fun and worthwhile. HCC Director Denise Sellers presented them with Gracie's gift certificates, thanking them for doing such a great job. She also challenged them to come up with a name for the joint program to use in recruiting future participants. As an additional "thank you" for the time invested by MS staff, HCC donated two Search Institute books on parenting adolescents to the Middle School Library. Mr. Toto anticipates expansion of the project to all three elementary schools next year. It is hoped that more students will volunteer as a result of good reviews by the pilot participants. Noah Tennant, who also serves as the Haddonfield Public School liaison to the HCC Board of Trustees, expressed appreciation for the project, saying "Thank you for providing [the MS students] with this forum to exercise leadership. They have truly thrived on the opportunity to work with the young people of HCC." HCC Central School parents and students were surveyed as to their reaction to the project. As hoped, most reactions were extremely positive. The children enjoyed the interaction with older students, especially "learning about what it's like to be in Middle School." HCC uses the "Forty Developmental Assets" as a cornerstone of their curriculum.
