"I just wanted to let you know how much Matthew has enjoyed all of the activities this year.

Thank you for all you do. Also, there have been many occasions when Mathew asked to go to EDKP another day, so I know how much he enjoyed his time there."

Extended Day Kindergarten Program

WHAT IS THE EXTENDED DAY KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM (EDKP)?

The Extended Day Kindergarten program is designed to be an enriching, developmentally appropriate environment which complements the Haddonfield kindergarten day.

Using a thematic approach, and incorporating principles of child development including both teacher directed and child directed activities, the program is infused with current research on best practices to encourage the cognitive, social, emotional and physical growth of the children. All activities are designed to promote life skills which help children develop into enthusiastic and successful lifelong learners.
Children will spend part of each day in teacher directed activities which set the stage for learning on a theme, followed by opportunities to explore and engage in activities based on that theme as well as other self selected interest areas.  Curriculum areas include art, literature, music, STEM (science, technology, math and engineering) fitness and nutrition, fine and gross motor, social skills, and service learning.  Essential learning skills such as critical thinking, making connections, and creativity are infused into all daily activities.

Building strong bodies is important to both lifetime good health and cognitive development, so time for fitness and fun outdoors is a part of each day, weather permitting. Nutrition and relaxation techniques are also included in our curriculum.
The EDKP day is designed to provide opportunities for the children to develop important social skills as well, including focus and self control, communication, empathy and perspective, and coping skills.  Our goal is equip children with the social skills needed to learn to successfully form and enjoy friendships, navigate the stresses, and relish the challenges of school.

Finally, EDKP is a place where children gain all of these skills – cognitive, social, emotional, physical – in an environment where they feel engaged and comfortable with a caring, dependable staff to whom they can turn for support and encouragement.

OVERVIEW OF THE EDKP CURRICULUM

The Extended Day Kindergarten program is designed to be an enriching, developmentally appropriate environment which complements the Haddonfield kindergarten day.

The program encourages children to explore, experiment, create, test ideas, and expand their world.

Using a thematic approach, and incorporating principles of child development including both teacher directed and child directed activities, the program is infused with current research on best practices to encourage the cognitive, social, emotional and physical growth of children. All activities are designed to promote life skills which help children develop into enthusiastic and successful lifelong learners.
The goal of EDKP is to help the participants grow into physically and emotionally healthy individuals, who respect others, are happily engaged in learning, can work independently as well as in group settings, and are prepared for the rigors of mastering twenty first century skills.

The EDKP Curriculum

The Extended Day Kindergarten Program is committed to providing a rich learning environment with both a well-planned, intentional curriculum, as well as opportunities for spontaneous activities which arise from the children’s interests.
The curriculum is based on, but not limited to, the following main areas of learning:

  • The Arts: Music, dance, art
  • Literature: Classic and modern children’s literature, including fiction, non-fiction, fairy tales
  • STEM: Science, technology, engineering  and math
  • Health: Fitness, nutrition, emotional well-being
  • Service: Service learning, both in school and the community and beyond
  • Fine Motor: Development of skills needed for writing and other fine motor activities
  • Gross Motor: Development of large muscle and physical skills

Children will spend part of each day in teacher directed activities which set the stage for learning on a theme, followed by opportunities to explore and engage in activities based on that theme.

A media center, a reading area, and materials for imaginative play provide children with small group or individual opportunities to further explore the current theme.  Related hands on activities, experiments, imaginative play with peers, reading materials and other activities and resources are provided to generate interest and excitement, and to encourage children to pursue areas of particular interest to them,

EDKP Also Develops Essential Life Skills

Haddonfield Child Care believes that there are additional critical life skills to be developed in kindergarten, and the EDKP program infuses life skill development in all activities to assist children in readiness for first grade classroom function and beyond.  The essential skills needed to encourage a love of learning and prepare children for a 21st century academic curriculum include:

  • Social Skills and Interpersonal Relationships: Form friendships and get along with others
  • Working Within School Routines: Navigate the systems and relish the challenges of school
  • Communication and Listening Skills: Listen carefully, respond appropriately, share ideas
  • Critical Thinking: Develop and challenge hypotheses, form opinions, and think strategically
  • Self Regulation and Executive Function: Develop self-control and manage emotions
  • Decision Making and Planning: Evaluate situations, choose wisely, plan actions
  • Creativity: Think as an individual, and use personal skills and talents
  • Coping and Stress Management: Develop strategies to cope with daily stress and self-calm

Imaginative, self-directed play with peers, reading for pleasure, dramatic play, building and construction, board games, and other child selected activities encourage curiosity and permit the children to pursue their own interests. A rich playtime provides children with opportunities to navigate interpersonal relationships, practice cooperation, self control and conflict resolution, and learn empathy and perspective.
